The Bayworld complex is situated on the Port Elizabeth beachfront, overlooking the MacArthur Swimming Pool and King's Beach. It includes a dolphin pool, museum, snake park and an aquarium tank which will provide hours of fun and educational opportunities for the whole family.
Two Indian Ocean Bottlenose Dolphins, Dolly and Dumisa, occupy the large dolphin pool. The Bottlenose Dolphin is perhaps one of the most well known cetaceans, because of its widespread use in marine parks and research facilities.
Adult dolphins range in length from 2 - 4 m and weigh from 150 - 650 kg. They eat a variety of fishes, squids, eels, and crustaceans. Bottlenose Dolphins typically swim at a speed of 5-11 km/h and in short bursts they can reach peak speeds of 35 km per hour. The species is commonly known for its friendly character and curiosity.
The Jackass Penguin is found only off the coast of southern Africa and is South Africa's only resident penguin. It breeds on 24 islands between Namibia and Port Elizabeth. They grow to 70 cm tall and weigh from 2 - 4 kg. They have a black stripe and spots on the chest, the spots being unique for every penguin, like human fingerprints. When calling the sound can be compared to the loud braying of a donkey, this is mainly at the breeding grounds. They are silent when at sea although they may call at night or in foggy conditions. They are also known as the African Penguin.
The Nile Crocodile is a large reptile which grows up to 3.5 m in length and weighs about 225 kg, although specimens as long as 6 m and weighing more than 1000 kg are known. The jaws are long with prominent teeth. The eyes and valved nostrils are situated on top of the head. Contrary to popular belief the major portion of the crocodile's diet consists of fish. Although crocodiles look ungainly on land, they can sprint as fast as a human. While no longer threatened with extinction it is on the verge of disappearing in many countries. They can reach an age of 100 years.
The Burmese Python is one of many snakes and reptiles on view in the Snake Park. Burmese Pythons range from North-western India east through southern China and south through the Malay Peninsula and East Indies. They can grow to 7.65 m in length and weigh as much as 115 kg. The Burmese Python is one of the six biggest snakes in the world. Burmese Pythons are light-coloured snakes with many dark brown blotches bordered in black down the back. The perceived attractiveness of their skin pattern contributes to their popularity with both reptile keepers and the leather industry.
The Cape Fur Seal is found along the coast of Namibia and along the west coast of South Africa. The adult male seal is just over 2 m long and weighs from 200 - 300 kg. Females are much smaller at 1,5 m and weigh between 50 and 75 kg. The Cape Fur Seal feeds on fish, octopus and crayfish while at sea. It breeds and rests on land. The male will defend his harem of females in a breeding colony. A few Sub Antarctic Seals are also on display.
