Sacramento Cannon
|
On 30 June 1647 the Portuguese ship, Sacramento, sunk of the coast of the current Port Elizabeth. The 72 survivors attempted to reach Mozambique on foot. Only 9 of them survived the 1300 km trip to Delagoa Bay. This cannon, one of 40 salvaged from the wreck in 1977, honour those brave men. It points at the spot where the wreck was found. This cannon was made from bronze in Macao during 1640 by Bocarro. It weighs 2500kg and measures 469 cm in length.
The lady standing to the side of the cannon will soon become my wife.
